Rural Techie Troops
From my perspective, living in an urban place, computer science is pretty much taken for granted. I have access to computers, computer science courses, clubs, and general social activity related to software engineering and development. However, my friend, Shirling Xu, in Statesboro, a rural town, expressed her views on this subject. She takes AP Computer Science online, she is the only Internet Applications high school competer in her region, and she did not get the opportunity to do the Congressional App Challenge because there is not enough support in her region. So, we decided that something must be done to increase the awareness base for computer science in the rural regions.
We are currently outlining our plan on this document. In addition to this planning, we are also officially established as a Google Developers Community Group and we are also working on a potential partnership with the Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Southern Georgia. This, we believe, will help expand this program to reach more people, thereby satisfying our goal of increasing overall awarness of computer science and active incorporation into their local communities.
